Ignition services we offer

We handle all vehicle ignition work on cars and trucks of all makes, including GM (Chevrolet and GMC) and Ford:

  • Keys that won't turn in the ignition.
  • Broken key extraction: we remove keys that broke off or are stuck in the ignition.
  • Ignition repair and rebuilds for worn, sticking or damaged ignitions.
  • Ignition cylinder replacement, with new keys made to match.

Vehicles we work on most

Our most common ignition jobs are ignition rebuilds on Honda and Acura vehicles. We also do a lot of ignition work on Audi, Volkswagen and GM (Chevrolet and GMC) vehicles, from keys that won't turn and broken key extraction to ignition repair and cylinder replacement. Ford and other makes are handled too. Whatever you drive, call with the year, make and model and we'll tell you what your ignition needs.

Signs your ignition needs a locksmith

  • The key won't turn, or only turns after a lot of jiggling.
  • The key is stuck and won't come out of the ignition.
  • The key broke off inside the ignition.
  • The ignition turns without the key, or the key feels loose and sloppy.
  • The ignition was damaged by someone trying to start the vehicle without a key.

Check these two things first

Before you call, try two quick things that often get a key turning again. First, if the steering wheel is locked, turn the wheel gently back and forth while you turn the key. The steering lock can bind the ignition. Second, on an automatic, make sure the shifter is all the way in Park. Many vehicles won't let the key turn back or come out unless it is. If neither helps, don't force the key. Forcing it is a common way keys end up broken off inside.

Repair, new key or new cylinder?

Not every ignition problem means replacing parts. A key that's badly worn can stop lining up with the pins inside the cylinder, and a fresh key cut to the correct code can sometimes fix it. We extract broken and stuck keys from the ignition. When the cylinder itself is worn out or damaged, we repair it or replace the ignition lock cylinder and make keys to match, so the vehicle runs on a key you control. We'll tell you which of these your vehicle needs before we start.

Many vehicles use a transponder chip key, so new keys may need to be programmed to the vehicle as well as cut. We do that on site for many makes and models. See car key replacement and programming.

When it's not the lock

If the key turns normally but nothing happens, or the dash lights come on and the engine won't crank, the problem may be the battery, the starter or the electrical side of the ignition switch rather than the lock. Tell us exactly what happens when you turn the key, and we'll tell you honestly whether it's a locksmith job or one for a mechanic.

On-site ignition work

We're a mobile-only locksmith, so we come to the vehicle, whether it's in your driveway, at work or in a parking lot. We do ignition work on cars and trucks of all makes, including GM and Ford. The video below shows one of our jobs: replacing the ignition lock cylinder on a Chevy truck on site in the Springfield area and testing it with the new keys.

What to have ready

For security reasons, we work on ignitions only for the owner or an authorized driver. Have your photo ID and the vehicle's registration or title handy, and call with the year, make and model. The VIN helps too.
